Prevention is better

This text appears at the bottom of some of our emails, especially when the email talks about bank account details.

Fraud Risk:

Please be aware that there is a significant risk posed by cybercrime, specifically relating to email accounts and bank account details.

1. We recommend that you call our office to confirm our trust account details prior to any transfer to it;
2. Our bank account details will never change during the course of a transaction;
3. We will never change our bank details via email, and
4. Emails that are from us will never have links that will take you to somewhere you will be asked to give a username and password.

We cannot accept responsibility if you transfer money into an incorrect account.

There are a number of tools being developed to transfer sensitive information, like bank details. Here is one of them:


They talk about how to prevent hacks.

  1. Use common sense; don’t proceed with any actions if you’re not 100% comfortable;
  2. NEVER send account information via email;
  3. Carefully check the sending address to ensure its correct;
  4. Be careful of attachments and links;
  5. Don’t open anything you weren’t expecting;
  6. Be on the lookout for the unusual, anything different about the way the sender is communicating with you;
  7. Verify with them over the phone before proceeding with any actions;
  8. Double check everything before proceeding with a transaction and,
  9. Make sure your antivirus software is up to date;
Another related tip is that if you send someone a link or attachment describe in the email what it is and why you have attached it.

Avoid having your email deleted, choose a subject for your email wisely.
Subjects that include our matter number and, or a property street address and suburb are less likely to be mistaken for spam.

Be smart with how you communicate.
